The attorney general has released body camera footage of a fatal police shooting in Saratoga County

The Attorney General’s Office released body camera footage as part of an investigation into the death of a man shot by police in September in Saratoga County earlier this year.

James Dellea, of Hillsdale, was shot and killed by police on 9/11. The incident started around 4pm when police were looking for Dellea because he had threatened to harm himself.

It was in the Albany-Saratoga Freeway parking lot on Route 9 in Malta. He took off and led police on a low-speed chase to Bethel Saratoga Church. After refusing multiple commands to get out of the car, he pointed a long gun at the soldiers, and an off-duty officer fatally shot him.

State law requires the Attorney General’s Office to investigate all civilian deaths at the hands of police.

The redacted video shows Trooper Cody Branam getting in and out of the car. He asks Delea how he’s doing and tells him to get out of the car. Dellea shakes her head and leaves. He was traveling at 50 mph, according to a video caption.

After editing, the video is shot in the church parking lot. Several portions of the video are played and slowed down/zoomed in at various points.

Soldiers shout “Raise your hands!” “Get out of the car!” several times.

Police said Dellea is on the phone at this time.

Dellea can be seen punching the driver’s side window. The cops keep saying to get out of the car.

A trooper says there’s a gun on the passenger side. One of the soldiers says they should break the window.

Video from the other officer’s body camera shows Della then break the glass of the passenger side window with the long gun.

He holds him and the off-duty officer, identified as Brian Rudolph, fires three shots in rapid succession.

Delea was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dellea, 48, was a well-known motor vehicle driver in the area.

His sister previously told NewsChannel 13’s Dan Levy that Dellea had experienced personal tragedies in the last three years. He lost both his parents, two brothers and his one day old grandson.
