Healthcare employment trends, BLS finds, but employers continue to face recruiting challenges McKnight’s Senior Living

Employment continued to grow in healthcare and government, more than any other service sectorBureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday.

The ambulatory care services sector added 36,000 jobs in October, followed by nursing and residential care facilities, which added a total of 9,000 jobs.

In the economy, the unemployment rate is holding steady at 4.1% month over month.

But recruiting and retaining nurses and other professional caregivers poses consistent challenges for long-term care and other healthcare providers. Given a changing landscape in technological advancements and shifts in resident and patient care models, providers must address the issues driving healthcare workers out of the industry, according to Soliant’s 2024 Healthcare Employment Trends Report Health.

There has been a culture-to-culture shift, with a toxic workplace culture, poor work-life balance and a lack of advancement pushing healthcare workers to the exits, according to a blog post shared by Solient.

“As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, understanding these trends will be key to shaping the future of healthcare employment. Organizations that proactively address employee concerns about workplace stress, workplace culture and career growth will be better positioned to create a satisfied and engaged workforce,” according to the blog.

Soliant said Gen Z workers, those born between 1997 and 2010, are the most likely to leave the profession within one to three years. For them, an unhealthy workplace environment and culture are key to leaving, far more than the stress and burnout cited by older workers, the company said.

“The healthcare industry must adapt to the changing values and expectations of the workforce to ensure sustainability and future success. By prioritizing the needs and motivations of healthcare professionals, organizations can cultivate a more resilient and engaged workforce that will continue to deliver quality care to patients across the country,” according to the blog post.
