LAMAR COUNTY, Miss (WHLT) – A 24-year-old man was sentenced after being convicted of shooting a Lamar County deputy in the back in 2022.

Johnson was convict by a jury on Oct. 18 on two counts of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer, two counts of burglary to a motor vehicle and burglary of a habitation.

Investigators said deputies were looking for a car burglary suspect in the 600 block of Burnt Bridge Road on Dec. 16, 2022, when Johnson shot one of the deputies. Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS) officials said the deputy had exited his vehicle when he was shot in the back.

The deputy was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he was treated and released the same day. Johnson was arrested the day after the shooting.
