Bystander shot with suspect in Fredericksburg – NBC4 Washington

A suspect and a bystander were shot after deputies tried to arrest a wanted suspect during a traffic stop at a gas station Saturday night in Fredericksburg, Virginia, according to police.

Spotsylvania Township Crime Task Force deputies attempted to arrest a suspect during a traffic stop at a gas station in the 3000 block of Plank Road at 8:50 p.m. Lawrence D. Toler II of Woodford, Virginia is wanted out of Chesterfield, Virginia on multiple felony warrants.

When deputies approached Toler’s vehicle, the 37-year-old man attempted to flee the scene and backed into a deputy’s vehicle.

Toler then pointed a firearm at a deputy and several deputies discharged their service weapons. Toler was shot along with a bystander standing outside the gas station. The viewer was a grown man.

Toler and bystanders were taken to a nearby hospital. The passerby was treated for minor injuries and has since been released. Toler is treated for life-threatening injuries.

Police say a firearm was found in Toler’s vehicle. No law enforcement officers or others were injured in the incident.

At the request of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, the Virginia State Police Culpeper Bureau of Criminal Investigation is now investigating the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing at this time, according to a news release. Once the State Police complete their investigation, the criminal investigation file will be turned over to the Fredericksburg Commonwealth’s Attorney for review and adjudication.
