September 5 Trailer: Thrilling drama covers the terrorist attacks during the 1972 Munich Olympics

Paramount Pictures released the trailer for September 5a thrilling drama that many awards pundits consider a dark horse at Oscar 2025.

This gripping film chronicles the terrorist attacks during the 1972 Munich Olympics through the eyes of the ABC Sports team covering the event on television. Black September, a Palestinian terrorist group, infiltrated the Olympic Village and kidnapped several Israeli athletes. “There is a hostage situation in the Olympic Village right now,” says Geoff Mason of John Magaro, producer at ABC Sports.

Due to the studio location crisis, ABC Sports is switching from covering the Olympics to providing updates on the hostage situation. An estimated 1 billion people watched the broadcast globally. Despite the large number of viewers, Geoff and his team face moral and ethical dilemmas about their coverage, including whether cameras would show terrorists executing hostages on television.

“This is our story and we’re keeping it,” says Roone Arledge of legendary ABC director Peter Sarsgaard.

In addition to Magaro and Sarsgaard, September 5 The cast includes Ben Chaplin, Leonie Benesch, Zinedine Soualem, Georgina Rich, Corey Johnson, Marcus Rutherford, Daniel Adeosun, Benjamin Walker and Ferdinand Dörfler.

September 5 is directed by Tim Fehlbaum, a Swiss director best known for the 2011 film Hell and 2021 tides. Fehlbaum wrote the screenplay with Moritz Binder and Alex David.

September premiered at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival to an overwhelmingly positive reception. The drama could rock the year 2025 Oscars as a sleeper contender for Best Picture. The Hollywood Reporter currently has September 5 like movie no. 1 in the ranking of the best film.

September 5 opens in select theaters on November 29, 2024, before expanding to December 13, 2024.
