18 decomposed bodies discovered at the funeral home, the owner arrested

All eyes are on Georgia South funeral home after her owner was arrested and charged with neglecting human corpses. Authorities say they found more than a dozen decomposing bodies on the grounds of the funeral home while serving a routine evacuation notice to the business.

The owner of Johnson Funeral & Cremation Services in Douglas, Georgia has been charged with 17 counts of abuse of a corpse. Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). Arrest warrants for Chris Lee Johnson say he failed to properly preserve the bodies, resulting in “gross disfigurement” of the deceased.

Of the 18 human remains discovered, one is that of a child. Authorities continue to work with the families of the deceased to identify and learn more about the victims. The bodies had been decomposing for months before they were discovered, officials say. Also in the premises, the police discovered several dead animals, including cats and dogs.

Coffee County Coroner Brandon Musgrove said WALB-TV“My priority is to identify the bodies properly and notify the family. Please take care of us. We are working as diligently as we can.”

During his court appearance on Monday (October 28), a judge denied Johnson bond due to the seriousness of the charges. As of Nov. 1, Johnson has no attorney listed under his name, but he told the court he plans to seek his own attorney, according to News Local 3. Court records also say Johnson is expected to face additional charges as the investigation into his business continues.

Interestingly enough, earlier this year Johnson ran for public office in the small town of Douglas. He was defeated in the primary for Coffee County coroner in May, he said Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Officials say Johnson was in the process of relocating his business when the bodies were discovered. Between moves, Johnson’s business operated out of its original location.

Even worse, in light of the scandal, former and current clients of Johnson Funeral & Cremation Services are beginning to question the condition of their own deceased loved ones.

“We still haven’t received a death certificate that we paid Chris Johnson in full,” Sherri Thomas told WALB-TV. “I called probably over 50-60 times and he didn’t answer even once. And I wonder, with all these bodies, if even my mother’s body is in this urn.”
