Here are the 5 medicines you shouldn’t leave unused in your home

Drug Enforcement Administration officials say it’s important for people to properly dispose of any unused or expired prescription drugs before they are accidentally consumed, stolen or abused.

“It’s best to get these drugs out of the house, unless you have specific reasons from your provider to keep them in the house when you’re done with them,” says Dr. Holly Geyer, addiction medicine specialist at the Clinic Mayo.

Doctors and DEA officials say there are five groups of prescription drugs that people should never leave unused in their homes.

Opioids: Data from the Centers for Disease Control found that last year, oxycodone and other opioid drugs were linked to more than 81,000 overdose deaths in the US.

Anti-anxiety medications: “These are things like lorazepam or alprazolam as a class of drugs, they can be toxic, especially when combined with other drugs that can be sedating,” says Geyer.

Medicines for sleep: They should be thrown away or locked up when no longer needed.

Muscle relaxants: If used with other substances, it may increase the risk of overdose.

Medicines for cough: “We recognize something called ‘robotripping’ in the adolescent population if there is dextromethorphan in the medication. So cough medicines can be toxic even if you buy them over the counter. Take them out if you don’t need them anymore,” she says.

DEA officials say the best way to get rid of these drugs is to find a drug storage box at a local police station.

People are also encouraged to participate drug withdrawal collection days.
