A couple claims themselves in a fire in a crowded parking garage in New York

A man and a woman were killed early Saturday after a fire broke out in a garage in Queens, police and firefighters said.

Sixty firefighters responded to the “crowded” two-story garage behind a private home on 91st Ave. near 175th St. in Jamaica after receiving a call around 6:35 a.m., officials said.

“I was sleeping and suddenly I woke up. I heard someone yell, “Get out! Get out!'” recalled Faim Shorom, 28, a resident of the house on the second floor. “I looked outside, I saw a lot of smoke coming from the garage – not in the house, in the garage.”

“I was in the house,” said another man who lives on the first floor of the place. “Everybody went to the back (of the garage) to try to get them out and couldn’t. I had no chance. The fire was too big to enter. The other friend… came in, tried to pull it out and pull it out. He couldn’t.”

After initially being called to an incorrect address a block away, firefighters located the garage on fire, Battalion Chief Jack Flatley said.

“There was a lot of smoke in the driveway… There were flames coming out of the garage on the first floor. They had immediate access to a regular door, but then they cut through the garage doors to open it,” Flatley said.

Firefighters searched the two-level garage, where they discovered the two victims, one on each floor. The unidentified man and woman were pronounced dead at the scene, police and firefighters said.

“We believed from reports and reports from neighbors that people lived there, so we did a diligent search and were able to find the two victims,” Flatley said.

Firefighters had the flames under control by 7:30 a.m., officials said.

The two victims, who were both in their 30s, were in a romantic relationship, according to the man, who lives on the first floor of the hostel with seven others.

“It hurts the man. I have known them for years,” said the man, who wished to remain anonymous.

The first-floor windows of the three-storey house were boarded up on Saturday morning.

Flatley described “heavy clutter” in the garage, including several sofas and pigeon coops.

The Department of Buildings has been notified of the vacant structure, Flatley said.

No electric bikes or lithium-ion batteryDevices of the – type were found at the scene, according to the FDNY. Firefighters were still investigating the cause of the fire Saturday morning.
