Father of teenage drink-driving victim campaigns for lifetime bans | News from the USA

A grieving dad has used a Question Time appearance as a springboard to call for lifetime bans on drink-drivers who cause fatal crashes.

Scott Webb’s son Aidan, 19, died when Tyler Wilkins, 20, crashed his car while driving one and a half times the limit in December 2022.

In September, Wilkins, of Milton Keynes, Bucks., was jailed for three-and-a-half years and given a seven-year driving ban for the fatal crash.

Scott used a recent appearance on BBC show to raise the issue and has since started a petition calling for lifetime bans on drink-killing drivers.

It collected more than 19,000 signatures in a few weeks.

“Our main aim is to introduce a law that means drivers who kill while over the limit are banned for life,” said Scott, 52, from Milton Keynes.

“I don’t think the law is enough to stop people at the moment.

“When Aidan’s killer comes out, he will be allowed to drive again in just a few years. That doesn’t seem right to me.”

Aidan was a passenger on his way home from watching England at the Euros when Wilkins crashed his Vauxhall Corsa.

In addition to exceeding the limit, Wilkins’ car was found to have several faults, including a flat tire and faulty brakes.

He later pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving.

Aylesbury Crown Court heard how Aidan died at the scene and three other passengers, all teenagers, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Reflecting on the tragedy, Scott said: “I wish I had never let him out that night.

“My last words to him were ‘goodnight, don’t let anyone drink or drive.’ If I could turn back the clock and take his place, I would in a heartbeat.

From the tragedy, Scott was determined that something good could come out of it.

He added: “The main thing is we want to stop other families going through what we went through.

“This has had such a massive impact on us. It took us so long to get back to somewhere where we can do something like this.

“We will never be the same again. We will never be the same people. I lost a part of my life that day that will never come back.

“I’m not the same person.

“I say to anyone who is thinking about drink driving to think about a loved one, where you have to go and see them and you can’t see their whole face – that’s what families have to go through and what I saw at the hospital a the next day. and the chapel of rest will haunt me forever.

Scott said the family thought Watkins’ sentence was “far too lenient” and said they would never be able to forgive him.

He said: “I never received an apology or letter from him. His stepfather and mother wrote us a letter, but we didn’t read it either.

“It won’t help me in any way.”

Aidan had been on a gap year and planned to go to university to study cyber security.

Scott is supported in the campaign by wife Angela Webb, 48, and son Lewis, 17.

He felt that his question on Question Time had not been properly answered and was told after the show that his thoughts would be passed on to the Ministry of Justice.

Scott says he hasn’t heard back from them.

He also had a meeting with his local MP and said they were also waiting for a response.

The Ministry of Justice said: “Our thoughts remain with the family of Aidan Webb.

“Independent judges decide sentences, including whether to impose lifetime driving bans, but we are committed to ensuring that the sentences available match the seriousness of the crime and are investing in recruitment and extra court days so that justice can be done swiftly.”
