Russia launches overnight attacks on three Ukrainian regions

Russian missiles, bombs and drones hit three regions of Ukraine in targeted nighttime attacks, officials said.

Russia is waging an intensified air campaign that Ukrainian officials say they need more Western help to counter – even as doubts deepen about what Kiev can expect from a new US administration.

Since the war began nearly three years ago, following Russia’s full-scale invasion of its neighbor, the Russian military has repeatedly used its superior air power to blow up civilian targets across Ukraine.

More than 10,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed in the conflict, according to the United Nations.

A 500kg landmine bomb severely damaged a high-rise apartment building in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, in the middle of the night, regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said.

At least 25 people, including a child, were injured.

Glide bombs, for which Ukraine has no effective countermeasure, destroy their targets, sending a powerful shock wave and often leaving a wide crater.

In the southern city of Odessa, a Russian drone attack killed one person and injured nine others overnight.

In the capital city of Kyiv, debris from the intercepted missiles injured four people.

In total, Russia fired 92 drones and five missiles at Ukraine overnight, the Ukrainian Air Force announced. Four missiles and 62 drones were intercepted, and 26 drones were electronically jammed, the statement said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his country needs more help to fight Russia’s military might, even as uncertainty deepens about what help Ukraine can expect after Donald Trump was elected the next US president. .

“It is important to act together and decisively at the international level every time Russia tries to destroy our lives,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram. “This is the only way to achieve a just peace and stop the death of our people.”

Russia launched about 2,000 drones into Ukraine in October, about a third more than the previous month, the third consecutive month of a significant increase, the UK Ministry of Defense said on Friday.

The rate of fires in Russia has increased since the middle of the year, he said, adding that the latest high monthly figures are likely to become the norm.
