Virginia Beach City Public Schools to install cameras on all of their buses

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — This week marks School Bus Safety Week. According to Cris Sprouse, there were 248 cases of people driving past stopped school buses in the month of June. Sprouse is the director of special education for the Virginia Beach Public Schools Department of Transportation.

“If you go through the bus lights while they’re actively loading or unloading students, the camera catches it, it goes to the police department, the police department looks into it,” Sprouse explained.

So now, Sprouse and his team are in the process of installing cameras both inside and outside every school bus in their fleet. Funding has already been secured for these rooms.

“It’s probably going to be a while before they get on every bus, but it’s coming,” he said.

Not only is it School Bus Safety Week here in Virginia, but earlier this week marked School Bus Transportation Employee Appreciation Day. Remember, it’s never too late to show your appreciation for the people who drive your children to and from school safely.

“Bus drivers are there when it rains, when winter comes, they scrape the windows and prepare their buses to get your kids safely to and from school,” Sprouse said.

However, it’s not just students who appreciate their drivers. For one driver, Jeanne Morrison, she can appreciate her students more.

“They’re my bus babies, that’s all I am and am! My parents are wonderful, my children are wonderful,” she said.

As soon as cameras are installed on these buses, News 3 will be sure to follow up on the story.
