The Jackson County Legislature will discuss the jail site during its next meeting

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – An upcoming meeting of the Jackson County Legislature will include a discussion on a resolution that could authorize the sale of land for a new jail.

The meeting agenda for the Jackson County Legislature for Monday, November 18, includes a resolution “declaring certain lands owned by the county as surplus real estate and authorizing the county executive to enter into an intergovernmental cooperative agreement with the city of Kansas City, Missouri, for the purchase of said real property for the construction of a city-owned rehabilitation and detention center.

It follows an announcement Wednesday from Jackson County Executive Frank White Jr. that the county has reached an agreement on a municipal jail for the city of Kansas City. White said the plan is to sell a portion of land from the county’s new detention center, which is currently under construction and slated to open in 2026.

Mayor Quinton Lucas said Wednesday that this is something he has been working on for years.

He said the KCMO City Council approved an ordinance several months ago to identify $2.3 million for the land.

As part of the agreement, the city would agree to coordinate in good faith with Jackson County on the layout of the facility.
