“Thank you” cookies sent to North Carolina election office prompt response in case of emergency

WAKE COUNTY, NC — No good deed goes unpunished electoral workers in North Carolina.

A thank-you gift of pineapple cookies delivered to the Wake County Board of Elections prompted a hazmat response Tuesday after election workers raised concerns about a suspicious package sent from Hawaii.

“We’re on high alert with these things automatically,” Wake County elections specialist Danner McCulloh told ABC News, citing recent incidents of suspicious packages containing powder sent to electoral offices throughout the country.

Raleigh Police and Fire responded quickly to the incident, which was treated as a hazardous substance situation. Bomb technicians X-rayed the package, according to Raleigh Police Department Lt. Jason Borneo.

We’re just on high alert with these things automatically.

After the package was deemed non-threatening, officials opened it to find it was full of pineapple-shaped cookies from the Honolulu Cookie Company. The package, which was sent from an address in Hawaii, also included a handwritten thank-you note, according to a spokesman for the Raleigh Fire Department.

Operations from Wake County Board of Elections were not harmed during the incident, a county spokesman said.

It was a kind gesture.

According to McCulloh, a person who heard a radio story about Wake County decided to send the unannounced cookies to thank poll workers.

“It was a kind gesture,” McCulloh said, though he advised against sending cookies to his office.
