Sen. Chris Murphy and Republican challenger Matt Corey face off in the final debate before the election

NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) – Sen. Chris Murphy is set to face off against his Republican challenger, Matt Corey, in a key debate just days before next week’s election.

The two candidates will face off as Murphy seeks a third term in the U.S. Senate, a position he has held since 2013.

Murphy, who defeated Corey in the 2018 election, touted his legislative accomplishments during a news conference, highlighting his role in facilitating the first significant gun legislation in three decades.

He expressed pride in Connecticut’s relatively low rates of gun violence, stating, “There’s a reason gun violence rates are lower here in Connecticut than almost any other state in the country. That’s because we have a serious legislator who cares about making sure guns only end up in the hands of responsible citizens.”

Murphy also joined Waterbury advocates to discuss ongoing gun safety reform efforts Wednesday night.

Instead, Corey addressed issues affecting the Latino community, criticizing the Democratic Party for its perceived neglect of Puerto Rican voters.

He stated, “The bad joke here is the Democratic Party’s lack of regard for the Puerto Rican community. They have ignored this community for decades, but suddenly decided to cause outrage before the election.”

The debate is scheduled for tonight at 7:00 p.m. and promises to be a critical moment for both candidates as they pitch to their final voters ahead of the election.
