The High Court (HC) today (November 3) allowed a writ petition to file an appeal against a 7-year sentence of BNP chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

A High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain passed the order after Begum Zia’s lawyers filed the petition.

Senior Advocate Joynul Abedin, Advocate Kaiser Kamal, Advocate Ruhul Kuddus Kajol, Advocate Aminul Islam and Advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajol moved for the BNP President.

Senior advocate Joynul Abedin said that Begum Khaleda Zia has not asked for any favor as she wants legal resolution of the case.

“So, we want to file an appeal before the court against the sentencing decision against her in the registry file. The court in question granted our request to prepare the paper book of the case at our expense,” Abedin said.

A court here awarded seven years in prison to Begum Khaleda Zia and three others in the graft case in October 2018.

The court also fined them and directed the concerned authority to take 42 katha of land purchased for the trust into the custody of the government by confiscating it.

Later, Begum Zia appealed to the High Court against the sentence.

She did not get justice, being denied bail by the court during the ousted fascist government and at one point she was released on conditional bail by the government’s executive order.

But, Begum Khaleda Zia was released from the sub-jail on August 6 under an executive order following a joint meeting with President Mohammed Shahabuddin and heads of the three services, leaders of various political parties, civil society representatives and student movement leaders anti-discrimination. at Bangabhaban on 5th August.

Former prime minister and fascist Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina fled the country in the face of the mass uprising led by the anti-discrimination student movement last August 5.
