Route 44 in Rehoboth, a well-known location to readers familiar with the Bridgewater Triangle, has been named the scariest road in Massachusetts. according to a national survey of drivers.

That stretch of road is said to be home to the “red headed hitchhiker”. Earlier, the Gazette sent a reporter to drive down Route 44 to look for the elusive hitchhiker, but was not to be found.

A Florida car dealer performed a national survey of 3,000 Americans to determine which roads were the scariest. Route 44 came in at number 76 and beat out other scary Massachusetts roads like Dudley Road in Billerica (#116) and Wolf Island Road in Mattapoisett (#139).

Who, or what, is the red-headed hitchhiker?

Legend has it that people driving near the Rehoboth-Seekonk line on Route 44 after dark might encounter the red hitchhiker with his thumb out looking for a ride.

The hitchhiker is described as a red-headed man, usually seen wearing a red flannel and blue jeans. It is sometimes reported to have been seen on the side of the road, but also as a reflection on a windshield.

There is no known origin story for the hitchhiker, and local legends say they have never found a direct account. But the story is likely to give you chills when you drive that part at night.

The Bridgewater Triangle: A Link of Haunting Activities

Route 44 runs through the Bridgewater Triangle, a particularly haunted part of Massachusetts. Residents previously told the Gazette that they had seen supernatural sights in the trianglesuch as giant birds and UFOs.

Other strange sightings in the Bridgewater Triangle include a pile of bones and a large hairy creature.

Massachusetts loses first place to New York

The scariest road in the entire country, according to the survey, is New York’s Route 9, which runs through the town of Sleepy Hollow.

Sleepy Hollow of course it is the home of the legendary headless horseman. With the threat of being chased by a decapitated driver, it’s no wonder Route 9 has a fearsome reputation.
