Mother crashes car over Australian school fence, killing one child and injuring four

MELBOURNE, Australia — A mother picking up a baby crashed a car through a school fence in Melbourne on Tuesday, fatally injuring one child and seriously injuring four others, police said.

The 40-year-old mother had collected a child from Auburn South Primary School and was making a U-turn on the road when she crashed through a fence and into an outdoor table where five children were sitting after 2.30pm. time, insp. by the police. said Craig McEvoy.

An 11-year-old boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries and later died, police said in a statement.

Two 11-year-old girls, a 10-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy were taken to hospital with serious injuries, police said.

The driver was arrested at the scene and remains in custody, police said. Neither she nor her student passenger were injured.

Police were questioning the mother, McEvoy said, but had no further updates. Police specialized in accident investigation were on the scene to collect evidence.
