Video of Labor MP punching someone ‘shocking’, says Starmer | Political news

Sir Keir Starmer has called footage of a Labor MP punching someone “shocking” but refused to say whether he should resign.

In a video over the weekend, Mike Amesbury, MP for Runcorn and Helsby, was seen punching a man, who fell to the floor, before punching him repeatedly.

After the footage came to light, the Labor Party said it had administratively suspended his membership “pending an investigation”.

The Prime Minister said Labor had acted “very quickly” to suspend Mr Amesbury and, because of the police investigation, “there is not much else I can say”.

Asked if the backbench MP should resign, Sir Keir said: “The video footage is shocking, we moved very quickly to suspend him, there is now a police investigation and I can’t say much more now.”

Earlier footage showed Mr Amesbury shouting at a man as he lay on the floor, saying: “You will never threaten me again.”

In a statement, the MP said he felt “threatened in the street after a night out with friends” – and added that he “contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during this incident”.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “A 55-year-old man has been interviewed voluntarily by police as a precaution in relation to this incident. He has since been released pending further enquiries.”
