Fleming County man calls 911 about possible burglary and allegedly shoots responding deputies

FLEMING COUNTY, Ky. (FOX 56) — A Fleming County man allegedly called the sheriff’s office Thursday to send deputies to the home before shooting them.

The Fleming County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) posted on Facebook that just after 12:30 a.m. Thursday, Fleming County Dispatch received a 911 call from 68-year-old Michael Jones who said a possible burglary is happening in the 1000 block of Covered Bridge Road in Wallingford.

When law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, deputies attempted to contact Jones, but he did not answer the door. Court documents show he was “barely visible behind the refrigerator inside the house.”

“Deputy Chief Conn was able to make contact with Jones by phone and was telling him to come to the door,” FCSO wrote on Facebook. “Jones stated that he could not come to the door.”

While trying to communicate with him, deputies saw Jones grab a shotgun and begin to raise it toward a window where a deputy was sitting.

Court documents show the deputies took cover behind a cruiser before Jones “began firing into the front windows of the residence” where the deputies were said to be sitting.

After being told to drop the weapons and come to the front door, Jones eventually opened it and got out, but was still armed with two handguns, according to the sheriff’s office. He finally laid down his weapons and surrendered after being told to do so several times.

Jones was arrested and charged with first-degree wanton endangerment — discharging a firearm at a peace officer, according to an arrest citation. He was booked into the Mason County Detention Center.
