As mentioned, the Golden Joystick Awards exists since 1983but the categories did not remain the same.

Speaking to Radio 5 Live’s Wake Up To Money programme, Chris Dringthe head of GamesIndustry.biz, externalsays these awards do a good job of reflecting how the way people play games has changed.

“People used to buy a game, play it, finish it and move on to the next game. Now, games have been around for months and years, they are being expanded and added to. People are still playing Fortnite and Minecraft, games that came out ten years ago or more.”

He points to the “Best Game Expansion” and “Still Playing” categories as good examples of this, and says he’ll be keeping a close eye on their results.
