Houston Fire Department

Houston firefighter Marcelo Garcia, 42, died after responding to a fire in the East End on November 6, 2024.

A felony charge has been filed against a woman accused of setting a warehouse fire that killed a Houston firefighter earlier this month.

The charge was filed Thursday against 38-year-old Yesenia Espinoza Mendez.

Mendez is accused of intentionally fixing Warehouse fire that killed Houston firefighter Marcelo Garcia, 42 on November 6. She was charged with arson following the incident.

Mendez allegedly ignited materials inside the commercial structure in the 6600 block of Polk Street. The ignition caused the flames to quickly spread and engulf the interior walls of the warehouse.

Houston firefighters detained a procession for Garcia when his body was transported from the medical examiner’s office to Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home on Sunday.

This is a developing story.
