TEWU suspends strike following NLC directive and urges speedy resolution of grievances

The Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU) of TUC (Ghana) has announced the suspension of its industrial action indefinitely, which commenced on Monday 18 November 2024.

The strike was initiated over delays of over four years in the finalization and implementation of conditions of service for members in institutions such as the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB), the Ghana Library Authority ( GLA) and public and technical. universities.

The suspension follows a directive from the National Labor Commission (NLC) at a meeting held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.

The NLC instructed the union to call off the strike while engaging with management and stakeholders, with a further meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 27, 2024 to address the substantive issues.

In a statement issued by the union, TEWU management confirmed that consultations had taken place with its structures to comply with the directive.

“Following the necessary consultation between Union structures, regarding such matters, we therefore wish to inform our various stakeholders that our industrial action has been suspended.

“Our valued members are expected to resume full operations by Monday, November 25, 2024 at the latest,” the statement said.

TEWU urged the NLC to ensure speedy resolution of its grievances, warning against any further delay by the management of the affected institutions.

“We are counting on the National Labor Commission to help us expeditiously resolve our grievances without dragging our feet by any of our managements of the affected institutions to prevent further unrest on the industrial front,” TEWU noted.

The union stressed its commitment to securing a resolution of service conditions for its members, pointing out that the prolonged delay has left them feeling shortchanged.

“Our members are being shortchanged due to the continued delay in concluding and implementing the Terms of Service and this cannot be allowed to continue,” the statement added.

TEWU has assured its members of its determination to take the matter to a final conclusion, expressing determination to ensure improved conditions of service and immediate implementation for those affected.
