EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: Duchess of Sussex should sympathize with Duke of Rutland’s son over clothing brand row

The Duchess of Sussex should empathize with the Duke of Rutland’s son, Lord Hugo Manners, who has been attacked by wakery forces for “country robbery” over his Indian clothing brand Joah.

Meghan suffered a similar attack in 2018 over the Indian motifs on her wedding dress.

My colleague Robert Hardman revealed in his book Queen Of Our Times that American and Indian academics called the dress “condescending”, “tone-deaf” and “colonial amnesia at its worst”.

Maybe she and Hugo should have stuck to tweed.

Presenting an honorary degree to the Queen’s sister-in-law Camilla, did Princess Anne, the chancellor of the University of London, remember her youth when they both sought the affections of Andrew Parker Bowles?

Camilla married and later divorced him, while Anne was struck by the Catholic Guard officer.

All romantic ambition was dashed by ancient statutes which prevented the royal family from marrying Catholics, while retaining their rights of succession.

The Crown Succession Act 2013 removed this disqualification. Too late for Anne and Andy.

Beer-loving President Xi Jinping didn’t give the impression he wanted to have dinner with Keir Starmer in Brazil.

He was famous for beer by David Cameron in 2015.

Prince Philip made sure Xi’s suite at Buckingham Palace was furnished with bottles of HRH’s favorite Double Diamond and even slipped a few bottles into Xi’s luggage for the flight home.

Shouldn’t Starmer have brought a crate of beer to Rio as a gift?

Explaining her dyslexia, Cher says: “I don’t know my address and I don’t know my phone number.

“But I don’t care, if people want to find me, they will.” I say it’s the house with all the palm trees.

“And if I want to know my phone number, I click on Lucille Ball.”

Crazy charmer Cher saves her number under the Hollywood star’s name, safe in the knowledge that Mrs Ball won’t answer after she died in 1989.

After John Prescott took a left jab at an egg thrower in Rhyl, he received a phone call from Prime Minister Tony Blair. “I got off to the best start,” Blair recalled.

“I’m sorry for what happened, it’s awful of him to do that…” After about five minutes of this rant, John cut me off. “I know you,” he said.

“I know what you’re doing.” You want me to apologize. Yeah – well, I’m damned sure not. So you can forget it.”

The Who’s discoverer, producer Shel Talmy, who has died aged 87, was represented by Lord Hailsham at the High Court in 1966 after the band sacked him.
