A controlled explosion took place after Glasgow Caledonian University and Buchanan Bus Station were evacuated due to a bomb blast.

Police are understood to have recovered offensive weapons at the scene. The incident is currently not being treated as terrorism, STV News understands.

The Royal Navy’s bomb squad was at the scene with a large area of ​​the city center sealed off.

Police Scotland said officers were called after a suspicious object was found at around 1.10pm.

The surrounding roads were closed and the public was urged to avoid the area. The M8 slip road at junction 16 was closed but has since reopened.

SPT said Buchanan bus station closed at 1.50pm on Wednesday.

A large cordon was erected around the station after it was evacuated and the Royal Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was on the scene.

Killermont Street, between West Nile Street and North Hanover Street, and Cowcaddens Road, between Port Dundas Road and North Hanover Street, were closed.

Glasgow Caledonian University, on Cowcaddens Road, told students and staff they had been asked to evacuate.

An email to students said: “Due to an ongoing incident at the Buchanan Street bus stop, which is contained, we have been asked to evacuate the campus immediately as a precaution.

“Please take your personal belongings with you.

“There is no access to Cowcaddens Road. Staff and students must leave via North Hanover Street, Dobbies Loan or Milton Street.”

Police Scotland confirmed that a controlled explosion had taken place at the scene and that nothing suspicious had been found.

Three men were arrested in connection with the incident and possession of offensive weapons. An investigation to establish all the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing.

Police are now working to ensure the area will return to normal.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Three men have been arrested following an incident at Buchanan bus station in Glasgow on Wednesday 20 November 2024.

“At around 1.10pm this afternoon, police received a report of a potentially suspicious object at the bus stop. Officers contacted EOD and a controlled explosion occurred. Nothing suspicious was found.

“As a precaution, the bus station and surrounding buildings have been evacuated.

“Three men have been arrested in connection with possession of offensive weapons and inquiries are ongoing.

“Officers are working to get the area back to normal.”

A spokesman for SPT, which operates the station, said: “We apologize to everyone, Buchanan bus station is currently closed to passengers while police deal with an emergency incident.”

“There is no access to the station for passengers and no buses enter or leave the station.

“We will let you know when the station reopens. Sorry for the inconvenience.”
