Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) CEO Ezekiel Mutua has expressed strong opposition to the viral Mapangale dance style that has taken the internet by storm.

The controversial dance, created by MC Zendiambo, involves two dancers miming the act of slashing with a panga while moving rhythmically.

A male dancer usually plays the role of the “cutter” while a female dancer portrays the “receiver”.

What are Mutua’s objections to the Mapangale dance?

Talking to TUKO.co.keMutua, known for his firm stance on upholding moral standards, expressed concern about the dance’s potential to normalize violence, particularly against women.

He disclosed that the Home Ministry had flagged the song and sought the intervention of the MCSK to address the matter amicably.

“The Home Office has flagged the track. They have the ability to track the artist but have chosen a more constructive approach by involving MCSK. Our role is to support musicians while promoting decency. I watched the video but can’t see any . positive motivation behind it – it normalizes violence,” Mutua said.

He noted that the timing of the dance is particularly problematic given the country’s ongoing struggle with increasing cases of femicide.

“This song promotes violence against women. A dancer simulates attacking his partner with a panga. How is it not promoting violence? It’s not funny; it’s harmful. While the artist may not have intended harm, she should accept the criticism constructive”, Mutua added. .

The government official stressed that the government is investigating whether the song violates any laws and warned that it could be removed from streaming platforms if it is deemed harmful.

However, he expressed his preference for dialogue, urging Kenyans to stop promoting the dance while his team looks for a solution.

“The government is conducting a thorough investigation. We cannot rush to ban the song or condemn the artist without proper findings. For now, I encourage everyone to stop sharing and promoting it. I stand by the artist and want to understand their perspective” , concluded Mutua.

The Mapangale debate has sparked significant public discourse, with critics questioning its appropriateness and others defending it as a form of entertainment.

Ezekiel Mutua calls Pastor Kanyari

As previously reported, Mutua criticized Pastor Victor Kanyari for the controversial behaviour TikTok.

He denounced Kanyari’s behaviour as a parody of religious faith.

Mutua argued that figures like Kanyari, who have deviated from their roles as moral guides, are contributing to moral drift among the youth.
