McDonald’s suspect’s preliminary hearing continued for mental evaluation

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Destiny Gibson, 22, is accused of stabbing 22-year-old Christopher Borras in the chest and killing him at the McDonald’s located at Northside Drive and Hanging Moss Road in Jackson.

Gibson appeared before Hinds County District Court Judge Johnnie McDaniels for her preliminary hearing Tuesday afternoon.

The hearing determined whether there was enough evidence to prove Gibson committed a crime. Her lawyer, Malcolm Harrison, asked for this to be stayed.

Harrison says he is concerned about Gibson’s mental capacity to understand the legal process and asked the court to allow a mental evaluation.

Judge McDaniels granted this request. Her hearing will be continued pending a mental evaluation.

Harrison is not the only one concerned. Gibson’s family from Chicago, where she lives, was also in the courtroom.

They tell WLBT 3 On Your Side they’re not sure why this happened and send their condolences to Borras’ family. They didn’t know Gibson was in Jackson.

“She had only been in Hinds County 48 hours, 72 hours, Your Honor, when this happened. Her family was actually in the process of filing a missing persons report in Illinois when this incident happened, so there’s just a disconnect there, Judge,” Harrison said.

Gibson’s preliminary hearing was scheduled more than a month after her initial appearance, after her previous attorney withdrew from the case due to a conflict with another client Gibson is accused of assaulting.

Gibson is being held at the Raymond Detention Center. Her bond is set at $2 million.
