Man ‘voluntarily’ attends PSNI interview for defacement of Town Hall portrait – The Irish News

A man has ‘voluntarily’ attended an interview with PSNI officers investigating damage to a portrait of an ex after Lord Mayor of Belfast City Hall.

The PSNI says the man attended the interview on Tuesday, November 19, exactly one month after the incident at City Hall.

The damage was caused following an anniversary event for west Belfast Irish-language group Glór na Móna, which was attended by a number of senior citizens. Sinn Féin figures.

The party said one of its members and assembly staff had resigned after admitting involvement in the incident, which The Irish News later revealed was the son of a sitting MP.

The criminal damage incident was later upgraded to a “hate crime”.

“Police are continuing to investigate criminal damage to artwork in Belfast City Hall, which is being treated as a hate crime,” a PSNI spokesman said.

“The criminal damage is understood to have occurred sometime on Saturday evening, October 19, and was subsequently reported to police on Monday, October 21.

“A man voluntarily attended interview in relation to this incident yesterday afternoon, Tuesday 19 November.

“Our inquiries continue and we continue to work with Belfast City Council. Police would encourage anyone with information to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1194 21/10/24.”

Before the voluntary interview took place on Tuesday, a DUP MP criticized the time it was taking for interviews to take place about the incident. North Belfast MP Brian Kingston said it was “amazing”.
