An NYPD officer and an innocent bystander were shot and wounded, while a career criminal on parole was killed in a shootout after the suspect allegedly robbed a pair of convenience stores in Queens Tuesday night, the police said.

57-year-old parolee Gary Worthy allegedly held up two local businesses, a bodega and then a smokehouse, at gunpoint and fired a single shot during each of the robberies in which he demanded cash before the fatal weapon.

Officers were investigating the suspect in the first robbery when a witness directed them to Worthy, who had just robbed the smokehouse on Guy Brewer Boulevard in Jamaica, NYPD officials said.

Officers realized he also matched the description of the suspect from the previous robbery and ordered him to pull over near the corner of Jamaica Avenue and 160th Street around 6:30 p.m.

Worthy — who has 17 criminal records, including murder — instead ran and allegedly drew his firearm, shooting Officer Rich Wong, a seven-year veteran of the 103rd Precinct, once in the thigh, police said.

Wong returned fire and shot Worthy once in the face. He was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital, police said.

Officer Wong was also rushed to Jamaica Hospital, as was a 26-year-old woman who was shot in the crossfire. Both are expected to make a full recovery.

The gunfire sent hundreds of terrified New Yorkers running for safety.

A mother picking up pizzas nearby said she heard “a loud bang” and initially thought the noise was from a building site or a car backing up – until three more shots followed and the block crowded quickly erupted into chaos.

“It was followed by three more loud bangs and I said, ‘Oh, there’s gunshots and I have to run,'” Jennifer Wilson said.

“So I looked around for a second – everybody scattered. We all ran where we could and then the police came down and started blocking (the street).”

She was shaken by the gunfire and could not return home immediately because her car was on the other side of the recorded crime scene.

“I had a meeting up here, I come home to my kids with dinner, pizza and it’s really scary. It’s very, very scary, very disturbing, very disturbing.”

Wilson said hundreds of people ran for their lives after hearing the gunshots.

“Jamaica Avenue is busy. This is the busiest street in Queens and everybody’s walking around, doing their thing, probably on their way home like me and (we’re) all just scattered like bugs,” she said. “It was crazy. It was really crazy.”

Dozens of police swarmed the scene of the shooting, and the suspect’s body was left “in a pile of dirt,” Wilson added.

Worthy was on life parole for firearms possession and was arrested just six days ago, police said. He was also a suspect in three recent gun robberies, but was released back onto the streets after his most recent arrest.

Additional information about Worthy’s previous felony charge was not immediately available, but Mayor Eric Adams said the career criminal pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Adams criticized the criminal justice system for his release following his latest bust for narcotics possession and resisting arrest.

“We are angry because we have seen in two days a criminal justice system that is failing New Yorkers, the good people of this city,” Adams said.
