Richard “The King” Petty meets fans in Knoxville for a fundraiser for veterans

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – Racing legend Richard Petty was visiting Knoxville on Tuesday as part of Food City’s fundraising campaign for Paralyzed Veterans of America.

“The King” visited Food City on Middlebrook Pike after the store raised more than $10,000 for the cause, more than any other participating location. Fans lined up for the opportunity to meet and have their picture taken with the seven-time NASCAR champion.

Since 2011, Food City has raised over $4.1 million. This year’s campaign raised more than $415,000 for PVA to help disabled military veterans receive specialized medical care and pursue the careers they want.

Petty, 87, is the most decorated driver in NASCAR history. He set numerous records throughout his career, including most NASCAR Cup Series wins, most Daytona 500 wins, most poles, and most consecutive wins. He was the first driver to win the Cup Series championship seven times, a feat matched only by Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson.
