Giles Evan Richard Clark, the father of two local men who were recently charged with burglarizing the Marshalltown Mall and an East Olive Street residence, respectively, was himself taken into custody by local law enforcement in connection with both incidents after a warrant was issued for his arrest last week.

According to court records, two separate criminal complaints were filed against Giles Clark, 50, of Marshalltown, on Nov. 12 — the first, charging him with first-degree theft, alleging he was in possession of about 20 boxes of equipment Stolen mechdyne allegedly taken from the mall with an estimated total value of $50,147.33 at his residence on West Boone Street. His son, Ashton Clark, was accused of stealing $180,000 worth of electrical equipment from the mall’s property last December.

A second complaint charges Giles Clark with first-degree larceny (a class C felony), third-degree burglary (a class D felony) and possession of burglar’s tools (an aggravated felony) because of allegations that he and his son Hunter robbed a residence on East Olive Street. on Aug. 14, with felon in possession of a firearm, a Class D felony.

The complaint alleges that Giles Clark entered an unoccupied structure without the victim’s permission, left behind burglary tools and stole $135,000, $20,000 in savings bonds and a large amount of collectible silver coins.

“A cigarette butt was left at the scene, and after a DNA analysis was completed by the (Department of Criminal Investigation), a match was made to the defendant’s DNA. The defendant also had a collectible silver coin in his registered vehicle, which was later identified by the victim as one of his many stolen coins,” the statement said.

When a search warrant was served on Oct. 4, a long gun was found in Clark’s residence, and he is already a convicted felon in connection with a previous theft case in Marshall County. The warrant for Clark’s arrest was issued Friday, and according to the jail’s inmate website, neither Clark was listed as being in custody as of Monday night.
