The E. Coli outbreak is linked to organic carrots sold in 18 states

At least 39 people have become ill and one person has died in connection with an E. coli outbreak linked to organic carrots, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Sunday.

According to the CDC, the carrots were produced by Grimmway Farms. The affected products were organic baby carrots and whole organic carrots and were sold under various brand names, including 365, Good & Gather, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans and more.

The full list of affected products can be found here Here. Although 39 illnesses have been reported, the CDC believes the number could be much higher and urges customers to check their homes for any affected products.

“These products are probably no longer for sale in stores, but they may still be in your home,” the CDC said.

Affected baby carrots have expiration dates between Sept. 11 and Nov. 12, 2024. However, whole carrots did not have expiration dates, according to the CDC.

What is E. coli?

E. coli is a bacterium that is found in various places, including the intestines of people and animals, according to the CDC. E. coli doesn’t always cause illness, but you can get sick if you ingest the bacteria from a contaminated source.

Common symptoms are severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. The CDC recommends calling your healthcare provider if you have severe symptoms of E. coli. The CDC directory of health departments can be found here.
