The Spirit of Ubuntu: Strangers Raise Big Bucks for Leopard Attack Survivor

Even when people are strangers, they often open their hearts – and even their wallets – to support someone in need. In one such act of compassion, kind strangers have come together to raise money for a woman who survived a terrifying leopard attack, helping her on the road to recovery.

The attack of the leopard makes the woman stronger

A recently uploaded BackaBuddy campaign shared the story of Kathryn Powell, who survived a brutal attack at the paws of an injured male leopard outside her home in Sabi Sand, which is part of Greater Kruger National Parkon August 21, 2022.

As she prepared for her wedding to her partner Jason, the big cat pounced on Kathryn, digging her claws into her neck and leg. While the attack could have been fatalthe quick thinking and lifesaving actions of her neighbor and emergency responders helped Kathryn see another day.

Although she life-threatening injuriessuch as a severed carotid artery, torn femoral artery and muscle damage to her thigh, and went through extensive treatments and surgeries, Kathryn made sure to walk down the aisle in Jason’s arms.

Mzansi raises funds for leopard attack survivor

After seeing Kathryn’s BackaBuddy campaign, which noted that she needed funds for a neurostimulator, medical bills, PTSD trauma counseling and rehab treatments, people didn’t hesitate to help the woman financially.

So far, over R81 000 has been raised in Kathryn’s honour.

“I am constantly in awe of your courage, strength and gentle kindness through all the highs and lows. Here’s to the ongoing journey of healing, one brave step at a time.”

The leopard tries to break into the man’s house

The nail-biting video has garnered millions of views from curious social media users.
