2 dead, 10 injured in shootings along New Orleans parade route

Two people were killed and 10 others were wounded in separate shootings Sunday along a parade route in New Orleans, according to authorities.

The New Orleans Police Department said they responded to the first shooting at 3:38 p.m. in the 1800 block of Almonaster Avenue after reports of gunfire. Officers found eight victims suffering from gunshot wounds and transported them to a local hospital for treatment, adding that another victim arrived at the hospital in a private car.

About 45 minutes later, police responded to another report of shots fired at the intersection of Almonaster and Florida avenues, police said. One person died at the scene and the other victim was pronounced dead at the hospital. A third victim was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle and was listed in stable condition.

Officers said the investigation is in its early stages and no arrests have been made at this time.

Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said detectives did not immediately know if the incidents were related.

“There were … different kinds of approaches,” she said of the shootings, which took place in the area where a “second line,” a celebration after a parade, was taking place.
