CSRA traffic accidents killed at least 4 people in 4 days

AIKEN, SC (WRDW/WAGT) – It’s been a deadly few days on CSRA roads on both sides of the Savannah River, with the latest fatal crash early Monday in Aiken.

At least two of the crashes will involve criminal investigation — the pursuit in Aiken and a hit-and-run crash in Augusta that killed a pedestrian.

Here’s what happened:

MONDAY

Aiken County: The driver was evading deputies, troopers say

  1. A fatal crash was reported around 12:40 a.m. on Laurens Street Northwest near Hampton Avenue in Aiken, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
  2. A 2017 Kia sport utility vehicle was attempting to flee the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office when it left the roadway, overturned and struck a tree.
  3. A deputy conducted a traffic stop on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to authorities. When the deputy made contact with the driver after the stop, the diver took off, resulting in a pursuit, according to deputies.
  4. The driver died at the scene, according to police.
  5. One passenger was taken to Wellstar MCG Hospital in Augusta to be treated for injuries, according to troopers.
  6. We contacted deputies to learn more about what the driver alleged.
  7. The Aiken County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the driver’s name.

SUNDAY

Washington County: Fatal accident occurs outside Sandersville

  1. At 8:52 a.m. Sunday, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a fatal traffic accident on West Church Street outside Sandersville.
  2. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash.
  3. I contacted the troopers for details about the accident.

FRIDAY

Richmond County: Pedestrian killed in hit and run

  1. A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run accident Friday.
  2. The Richmond County Coroner’s Office responded to the Wellstar MCG emergency room in reference to a pedestrian fatality.
  3. The coroner’s office says the victim was struck by a vehicle at 10th and Greene streets.
  4. The victim was taken to Wellstar MCG Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at 8:57 p.m., according to Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen, who has not released the victim’s name pending family notification.

Saluda County: The driver dies 3 days after the accident

  1. Three days after a car accident in Saluda County, one driver died Friday, according to Coroner Keith Turner.
  2. The South Carolina Highway Patrol says the two-vehicle crash happened around 5:45 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of US 178 and Duncan Road, six miles south of Saluda.
  3. The South Carolina Highway Patrol says a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling north on Dunkin Road while a 2010 Jeep was traveling east on US 178.
  4. Troopers say the Jeep and pickup collided, sending both vehicles off the left side of the road. The truck went into a ditch, while the Jeep overturned.
  5. Both drivers were taken to hospitals with injuries, and the driver of the pickup died Friday.
  6. The medical examiner identified the driver as Joseph T. Ray, 35, of Saluda.
