Michigan man arrested after a string of armed robberies at Dollar General stores

BERRIEN COUNTY, MI – Police arrested a man Thursday, Nov. 14, after investigating a string of armed robberies over the past five months.

Edward Turner, 38, is accused of robbing a gas station and three Dollar General stores in southwest Michigan, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office.

Turner was arraigned in Berrien County 5th District Court on four counts of armed robbery, four counts of felony firearm and four counts of felon in possession of a firearm.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office says the first armed robbery happened in June at a Dollar General store in Berrien Springs followed by the shops in St. Joseph and Benton Harbor this fall. The last robbery happened in November at a Berrien Springs gas station.

While executing a search warrant at Turner’s home, police say they found evidence of the armed robberies, including the firearm that was used.

Dollar stores tend to be a magnet for crime because say the critics reduced staffing leaves them vulnerable. last year, Detroit Police Chief James Craig called them “soft targets” after 20 dollar stores in Detroit were robbed at gunpoint. And the Georgia sheriff Jimmy McDuffie told CNN in 2020, “We don’t call them dollar stores. We tell him to stop and loot.”

Turner is currently being held at the Berrien Sheriff’s Office Jail on a $250,000 bond.
