Denzel Washington made a surprising claim about his film career.

The Oscar-winning Hollywood star shared the revelation while promoting Gladiator IIRidley Scott’s long awaited follow-up to his 2000 epic starring Russell Crowe.

As the film is revealed to the world, with the final result proving somewhat divisiveWashington waxes nostalgic about his acting career, revealing that he is less than impressed with his output in the 1990s.

According to the actor, the decade started off strong with his performance in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X a particular climax. However, after the biopic, which earned him an Oscar nomination for best actor, Washington claims he acted in “some real bullshit.”

Washington didn’t mention specific movies, but in a new interview with The Timessaid, “Look at them—I won’t tell their names. It’s all in the 1990s. But we were winning. I had responsibilities.”

After Malcolm X, Washington played Don Pedro in Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Shakespeare Much ado about nothing and starred opposite Tom Hanks in Philadelphia. He also appeared in legal dramas The Pelican Brief.

Earlier this week, Washington was forced to set the record straight after he claims he is going to retire.

The actor hinted that he will call it a day after he has done his next five films, which will include black panther 3, but he said now BuzzFeed: “I didn’t say I was going to retire. I said there has to be a level of interest for me.”

He added: “I’m more interested in getting behind the camera, so it’s been about five years. It is very difficult. I may have used the word “retirement”… but I look at life in three sections – you learn, you win and you return. I’m on the turnaround side of life.”
