Concerned neighbors in Summerlin were worried about dark streets after the theft of copper wire

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Copper wire thieves leave some neighbors in the dark in Summerlin.

FOX5 has it covered INTERRUPTION in this area for over a month, and today – I found out that there have been some improvements.

There are a number of disruptions between Hualapai Way and Town Center Drive from east to west and Sahara Avenue to the north and Desert Inn Road to the south.

County workers are desperately trying to keep up with repairs.

In the month since FOX5 reported on the issue, the numbers have gotten worse.

Take it from Esther Astolfi. She has lived in the area for almost 30 years. “I don’t like it. It’s not safe,” Astolfi said.

She is not only worried about her dog’s safety, but other little ones as well.

“Kids riding skateboards, all that, and just people speeding by,” Astolfi said.

When asked if drivers can’t see children at crosswalks, she said you can’t.

But the county can clearly see it has a problem on its hands.

The Department of Public Works currently has an inventory of approximately 300 wire theft locations in need of repair.

This is from approx 200 locations in October and we were told that repairs are taking several months because there are so many street lights out.

County officials call it an expensive and frustrating problem.

The Department of Public Works says nearly a million feet of cable has been stolen since 2022, just over half the distance from Vegas Valley to Phoenix.

But back here at home, Astolfi hopes the fixes will come soon.

“I think other than that, it’s a great neighborhood. It’s a great park and let’s make it safe for everyone,” Astolfi said.

The Department of Public Works was in the area Tuesday to make repairs, but county leaders did not give FOX5 a time frame when that area will see fixes, saying only that repairs take several months.
