The Harrisonburg Mission Team is supporting North Carolina’s Helene flood victims

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – A group of volunteers from the First Presbyterian Church of Harrisonburg have returned from Hendersonville, North Carolina, where they helped residents dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

Western North Carolina faced off severe floodingleaving many homes and families in desperate need of help. A story shared by the church tells of an elderly man who risked his life to carry his wife to safety through waist-deep water. He returned to their flooded home and clung to hope for days until the waters receded, unsure if she had survived.

The team, which included 25 volunteers, cleared debris from residents’ homes. A member of First Presbyterian’s mission team said its main goal is to listen and help people begin the healing process.

“I would encourage people to consider doing it because when you go, you make a difference in someone else’s life. (You) don’t know, it could be you,” said Frank Sprinkle, a member of the team and a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Reach Global and Hendersonville Presbyterian Church support the work in Hendersonville. This volunteer effort is part of a larger two-year commitment to help the community recover and rebuild.
