Former Prescott Valley gym owner accused of sexually abusing children

PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ (AZ Family) — The former owner of a Prescott Valley gym faces multiple charges of child endangerment, including allegations of sexually abusing a child under 15.

The accused prosecutors Michael Craig Andrew, 47, over the summer after a 14-year-old girl accused him of sexual abuse. He was released in the summer after being arrested in July when the first charges were laid.

Those charges were dropped, but he now faces new charges.

He was arraigned Friday and is being held on $75,000 bail.

Andrew faces 15 charges including sexual abuse, indecent exposure and child molestation. Court documents show the charges go back to 2015. He has pleaded not guilty.

In court on Friday, prosecutors said Andrew and the victim’s father had been friends for more than 20 years. Andrew was accused of contacting the father after he was released on bail.

The judge said Friday that if he is released again, he cannot contact the victim or her family and must be supervised when he spends time with anyone under 18.

Andrew was the co-owner of a local gym, Arizona Dreams Gymnastics Academy. Court documents claim that’s where some of the abuse took place.

Melanie Jayne said her 14-year-old daughter has been going to the gym for three years and said it was a total shock.

“We were all caught off guard,” Jayne said. “Especially for my daughter because she’s known him for a few years and when she first found out, she kept saying, but he’s so nice. It was really heartbreaking.”

After the allegations surfaced, Andrew’s wife, Summer, posted on Facebook that Andrew was no longer the owner of the gym. She denied ever being a trainer and claimed she only opened the gym and worked at the front desk.

The Arizona family has reached out to Summer, but has yet to hear back.

However, Jayne and other parents who contacted the Arizona family said there was more to it.

“He was there every week, so he wasn’t just at reception,” Jayne said. “He would go out on the floor and talk to the kids. And there’s a parents’ night at the weekend, and he was in charge of that.”

She said she is worried about the future of this gym in a sport where trust between kids and coaches is so important. Jayne said the gym is the only reputable one in town, forcing many families to stay.

“Gymnastics is an intimate sport as it is,” Jayne said. “These girls are in singlets and doing splits and you’re there at least three or four days a week for four and a half, five hours at a time. Her innocence is taken away now because she trusted him.”

Andrew will have a preliminary hearing on January 6, where a court date will be chosen.
