BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham police made an arrest after Enrique Cortes Martinez, 45, was shot and killed in what investigators believe to be a road rage shooting.

Just before 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, East Precinct officers were dispatched to a person shot near Gadsden Highway and Parkway East.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Martinez collapsed in a truck. His 5-year-old nephew was also inside the vehicle, but he was not hit by the gunfire.

Birmingham police say 29-year-old Anson Evans was arrested at a Center Point apartment on Thursday, Nov. 14, before being taken to BPD headquarters and the Birmingham City Jail.

After a review of the information, authorities obtained an arrest warrant for Evans for capital murder (victim inside a vehicle).

Birmingham police say during the investigation, citizens provided tips to authorities that helped them identify Evans as a suspect in the shooting. Within hours of receiving the tips, Birmingham police say they arrested Evans.

“Anson Evans would not have been arrested on Thursday had it not been for members of the community providing tips to our detectives,” Birmingham police said.

Evans is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
