Man sentenced to 20 years in prison for assaulting Bryan officer

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – A man was sentenced to 20 years in prison this week for assaulting a Bryan police officer and continuing to violate a protective order into 2023.

Brazos County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement that Jermaine Harris, 39, was arrested last April after breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home in Bryan.

In the early morning hours of April 1, 2023, a Bryan officer responded to the woman’s home when she called 911 to report that Harris was banging on her windows and doors. When the officer arrived, he said Harris was being aggressive and not obeying his instructions.

After a struggle, Harris ran into the home and placed a child between him and the officer to avoid arrest. When that didn’t work, he punched the officer in the face several times. He was eventually placed in handcuffs and taken to the Brazos County Jail.

At the time of the assault, the DA’s office said Harris was also on probation for continuing to violate a protective order.

Jermaine Harris was sentenced to 20 years in prison for assaulting a peace officer and 10 years for violating his probation.
