An attempt to steal a tractor from a Gehlewal Road hardware store on Friday cost a suspect dear as the owner fired at him, injuring him in the leg, officials said.

They added that the theft accused, Vishal, was rushed to the local civil hospital, where his condition was declared stable.

Basti Jodhewal police reached the spot and started an investigation.

Police said they have initiated a process to register a case.

Police, however, did not reveal the identity of the store owner who fired the bullet.

Sub-inspector Gurdial Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) Basti Jodhewal, said the shop owner said he chased the suspect and asked him to stop.

When the suspect did not stop, he fired while aiming for the tractor tire.

The SHO said that Vishal is not able to record a statement. He said that Vishal is already facing trial in two theft cases.
