Fatal fire deemed non-suspicious pending investigation

Ottawa fire, police and paramedics responded to a call Thursday night in Vanier where a 50-year-old woman died.

According to media relations officer Nick DeFazio, when crews arrived on the scene, there were no flames visible from the small multi-unit apartment building in the 100 block of Deschamps Avenue.

Firefighters were initially called for “visible smoke,” which triggers an automated two-truck response. Once inside the building, just after 9:00 p.m., crews found a woman in a first-floor bedroom with no vital signs.

Officials pulled her into the lobby and began CPR before Ottawa paramedics took over.

Police noted in a social media post Friday morning that the woman succumbed to her injuries.

DeFazio said crews did not have to put out any flames.

The cause of the smoke and the woman’s death are still under investigation, but police say her death is not suspicious.

Ottawa fire and police are conducting a joint investigation with the Ontario Fire Marshal and the Office of the Chief Coroner.
