A 14-year-old boy is charged with stabbing a student at a Yonkers high school

Gorton High School in Yonkers was temporarily locked down Thursday morning after a fight broke out between two classmates.

“A student brought a knife to school and staged a targeted attack with another student,” said Dr. Frank Hernandez, associate superintendent of Yonkers Public Schools.

The unnamed 17-year-old student who was attacked is in stable condition at a hospital and a 14-year-old suspect is in custody.

Police say the teenager faces charges including assault, attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

The school was briefly placed on lockdown following the altercation.

The school has metal detectors that are used every day, but only for a random portion of the kids.

Parents and students say it’s not enough.

Ayleen Quino, a ninth-grader, was in class when the attack happened.

“It was kind of scary because you never know who’s going to have a knife because they have metal detectors, but they don’t use them all the time,” Quino said.

After the lockdown was lifted, school instruction resumed for the rest of the day.

“Just do the right thing,” implored mother Teresa Johnson, who was waiting for her child to be released, “… and the right thing is not violence.”
