A northern Ontario girl who survived being hit by an SUV and a machete attack that cut off her hand is recovering in an Ottawa hospital as her attacker, believed to be her ex-boyfriend, awaits his next court appearance .

“This little girl is so strong, she stayed conscious so she could give people the name of her attacker and tell them her name and what happened to her,” Paige said.

Rivard-Gagnon was arrested later that evening when his mother turned him in to police, according to Paige. He was charged with attempted murder; serious assault; possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; and breaching a conditional sentence order.

According to CBCthe latest charge is related to an attack on Smith’s stepfather in May, for which the sentence — house arrest and other conditions — was reduced on Oct. 29, just days before the alleged attack on Kaylie.

Court documents quoted by CTV shows that Rivard-Gagnon was not allowed to leave her Haileybury home at the time of the incident except for “medical emergencies, going to and from school, work, court, religious services, appointments and sessions for evaluation, treatment or counseling “.
