A hapless thief who broke into an Ocean Village restaurant has been jailed for two months.

Riyen Lea, 37, of Varyl Begg Estate, used a crowbar to break into the back of Bridge Bar and Grill at around 3.30am on Monday 28 October.

However, this was as successful as he got.

Once inside, he went to work with the rake on a fruit machine, but found it impenetrable.

Giving up on that, Lea approached the house and made an unsuccessful attempt to break it open – managing to cause hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

He found an item to steal before escaping – a fake gold ring that was left under the cash register.

Staff did not learn of the failed break-in until they opened at 5pm the next day.

Police were able to quickly identify Lea from CCTV cameras in the area and he was arrested at 2.15am the following Thursday at an address on Flat Bastion Road.
