Woman charged in fatal hit-and-run near Whiteville

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – A woman has been charged after a fatal hit and run involving a work crew member.

According to First Sgt. Andrew Pait with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded to Georgia Pacific Road near Midway Road on Nov. 13 around 12:44 p.m.

A crew was working on nearby lanes on the main road just outside of Whiteville when a car went off the road to the right.

He then sideswiped a parked car and struck David Jackson, 39, of Bladenboro, who was standing next to a truck that had a light on top signaling that crews were there. It landed in the eastbound lane in a ditch.

The car continued on Georgia Pacific Road. Officers later found a 2005 GMC truck a short distance from the scene behind a home that had damage consistent with a hit and run.

The suspect was found a short time later within the city limits.

Chloe Sagendorph, 27, of Whiteville, was charged with DWI, felony death by vehicle and felony hit and run.

The Whiteville Police Department and the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search.
