Woman, 79, visits grave of loved ones killed in hit-and-run; The Amazon driver has been charged

CANTON, Georgia (WANF/Gray News ) – An Amazon driver has been charged in the hit-and-run death of a 79-year-old woman in Georgia.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a report of a hit and run on Cumming Highway near Jordan Lane at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials said that’s where Sandra Fitts was found dead.

Capt. Jay Baker said the woman and her husband recently sold their nearby home but continue to visit the area to visit a nearby cemetery where she has family members buried and to feed some feral cats.

“It’s a very unfortunate situation,” he said.

Officials said evidence at the scene led them to believe the vehicle may have been an Amazon delivery truck.

A deputy spotted an Amazon truck turning down Bishop Drive while responding to the crash and called for help looking for it.

Baker said they determined the Amazon driver was traveling westbound on Cumming Highway when he struck the victim.

A Canton police officer found the truck with damage matching evidence found at the scene of the crash, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said the investigation revealed that the Amazon truck was the vehicle that struck the victim.

Authorities then arrested London Best, 24, and charged him with first-degree vehicular homicide and hit-and-run resulting in death.

“He appears to know what happened and actually continued to deliver packages in the area,” Baker said.

An Amazon spokesperson said Best is currently unable to ship on behalf of the company.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones at this difficult time. We will support local police as they investigate,” the company wrote to WANF.

“Something to remember for all drivers, this is a terrible situation, but if he hadn’t left the scene, it’s very likely he wouldn’t have been charged, certainly not for these crimes,” Baker said.
