Black Ops 6’s best weapon got a huge nerf in the Season 1 update

The Black Ops 6 Season 1 update brings a series of gun and nerf enthusiastsand the best weapon of the game was completely “destroyed”.

Weapon balancing is always a hot topic in any Call of Duty, and Black Ops 6 is no exception. Although there are a lot of options to choose from, always a hand rise to the top and stand above others, such as KSV or AS Val.

But arguably the most powerful weapon at launch was the AEK-973, a blasted Marksman rifle that was capable of melting players at any distance. Now, with the Season 1 update, Treyarch has given it a huge nerf.

In the patch notes, the developers revealed that AEK’s retreat penalty has been significantly increased from 20-25% to 50%, making it much harder to handle. This is in addition to small mobility nerfs, including an increased sprint time to fire.

However, the nail in the coffin is the change to the Rapid Fire attachment, which now only increases rate of fire by 5% and has had its explosion delay changed from 115ms to 295ms. This increases TTK and means you have to wait longer to get a subsequent shot.

Rapid Fire mode was the basic attachment in everything charging AEK-973 before the update, as even the developers admitted that its benefits were “too strong not to accept”.

Not everyone is happy with the change, however. Shortly after it was confirmed, players took to Reddit to criticize the decision, claiming it may have been too much of a problem.

“FlowKom” posted saying, “Well it’s been a fun week,” before many other players responded.

“If this explosion delay is true, it might as well delete weapons from the game. Pathetic developers, they won’t even let us have an M8A1/COD 4 M16 atmosphere,” said one reply, before another added: “Wow, they’ve completely screwed this thing up.”

The main issue fans seemed to have was that the changes to Rapid Fire made the attachment unusable. “Why would anyone use something that gives you a 5% rate of fire for 50% recoil?” asked another answer.

However, there were also those who felt that the AEK-973 would still be more than viable without this attachment.

“They really only need the rapid fire attachment specifically. The rest of the weapon is left alone. It’s still a good gun without the rapid fire,” said a more positive player.

Only time will tell how badly this nerf affects the AEK-973 in Black Ops 6, but it might make it hard to recommend in Warzone after integration.
