The threat that caused the schools to be closed was unfounded

NEW PHILADELPHIA ‒ The investigation into a school threat Tuesday determined it was unfounded and a suspect has been released, according to New Philadelphia Police Chief Tessa Pohovey.

Buckeye Career Center and Strasburg-Franklin Local Schools were placed on lockdown Tuesday morning due to an electronic threat which was received by a student at the career center from a family member.

Out of an abundance of caution, the career center has secured all students, staff and visitors from Tuscarawas Valley, Tuscarawas Central Catholic and Carrollton, according to Superintendent Bob Alsept.

Strasburg-Franklin Local Schools was placed on a lockdown that lasted about an hour without incident because of the Buckeye threat, Superintendent Vince Lindsey said.

“There was no direct threat to students or staff at Strasburg schools, but we will always make sure safety is our number one priority. We thank our local police for their cooperation and communication,” Lindsey said.

In cooperation with the New Philadelphia Police Department, the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office and the Stark County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement agencies identified and arrested one person.
